Mam Tor is the main link between the eastern end of Rushup Edge and the western end of the Great Ridge, making this one of the most-loved ridge walks in the Peak District National Park. Winnats Pass is always a favourite amongst photographers so make sure you bring your camera. Mam Tor sits on the edge of the Dark Peak (gritstone) and the White Peak (limestone) which means you get some fantastic views of the limestone parts of the National Park, such as the dry gorge of Winnats Pass. If you’re less intrepid and more of a ‘I’ll take the scenic route’ type, you can trek along the 6.5 mile walk passing Treak Cliff and Blue John Cavern – two of the biggest attractions at Mam Tor.Īnother great reason to try out Mam Tor is that both Castleton and Hope have some excellent pubs and tea rooms for you to rest your feet and recuperate once you’ve climbed – particularly the famous Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn.Mam Tor, meaning ‘Mother Hill’, is a 517 metre high hill near Castleton in the High Peak area of Derbyshire and is one of the most famous walks in the Peak District that well and truly deserves a place on your Peak District bucket list! For the more intrepid explorers, you can opt to extend the route to 8 miles, which includes a walk along the river on your way back to Castleton. Known as the ‘shivering mountain’, Mam Tor is said to be one of the best ridge walks in the country. Near Castleton and stretching into the Peak District, this beautiful walk takes you to a viewpoint at the ‘summit’ for want of a better word, where you can see a landscape that stretches from the Edale Valley to Kinder Scout and the Derwent Waters.
No, you won’t take this two-hour walk to the viewpoint and find a load of confused mam’s there (well, you might, but that’s not what Mam Tor is renowned for), but it’s definitely a nice walk to take your mam on, that’s for sure.
